The last few weeks I’ve really pushed dinking around on the internet / phone out of my repertoire of things to bide my time with. But from past experience I know that plan implodes if you don’t have easy things to put in their place. One of the replacements I picked is sketching cartoons.
I’ve always wanted to be able to take a memorable scene from a dungeons and dragons campaign and turn it into a cartoon. I’m pretty confident that I’ll never be a photo-realistic drawer, and our campaigns are normally goofy, so I’ve always thought that cartoony styles would be best.
I picked up the book “Humongous Book of Cartooning“, a long time ago and now I’m finally pursuing it. The plan is to keep drawing material easily available and visible in the house. When I’ve got a tiny bit of downtime, I can open up a page and try and replicate the drawing.
My first attempt was this “surprised boy”. I went way to big on it, so it looked super sketchy (in the literal sense of the word).

I tried a few more times until I thought it was decent, and then moved on to a few more subjects.

I plan to keep replicating things for a good while before trying to make truly original sketches.
