AI-Guided Painting

My wife and I have been spending some of our “date nights” painting together. We’re both not extremely proficient, but we’re trying to get better. Sarah’s method is to try and mimic features from images she’s found online. I, on the other hand, have been prompting Dall-E to generate paintings.

For example, I recently gave Dall-E the prompt:

Can you make an amateur acrylic painting of a dark / blue scene of the silhouette of trees, and dirt ground. In the middle is a small bonfire with a cauldron on it. There are no other living things in sight

It generated the following two options:

Those were quite close to what I was envisioning – and I was surprised that it gave me this on the first prompt. There is a bit of skill in crafting your prompt, and knowing what may happen. For example I sort of feared that I was going to get a witch somewhere near the cauldron, so I explicitly stated that there were no living things in sight.

This picture helped me see how I might make trees in the dark, and still have them be distinguished. Here’s my resulting painting:

Obviously the painting is not perfect – but our purpose isn’t necessarily to make perfect paintings, it’s just to paint.

Here’s another example AI-guided process:

Paint an acrylic painting of rolling hills with a red barn in the background. The scene is snowy and there is a snowman in the scene. The painting should look like it was done by a beginner
Make it much simpler

And here’s what I ended up making:https://oberloier.com/2023/11/14/snowy-scene-painting/

It’s a good example of “AI not taking jobs” – in this case it’s helping create them (not that I’m looking for this to be my job)
