  • A Stranger asked:
What is your favorite historical civilization/empire/tribe?
    • Shane replied:
I've never really thought about it. Good question! My gut reaction is to say the Inuits. Such interesting and resilient people!
  • A Stranger asked:
What is your favorite game to play? (Board game, Video game, Sport, etc.)
    • Shane replied:
If we're keeping the category broad like that, then I'd say D&D. My most memorable character is Ander Thorngage - halfling bard that had a growing disease called "Stone Lung"
  • A Stranger asked:
You mentioend you were a game collector, so what's your favorite console?
    • Shane replied:
Probably the GameCube - I have pretty strong nostalgic connections to it.
  • A Stranger asked:
Have you watched Snowpiercer? And if so what are your thoughts?
    • Shane replied:
I have not - but I just googled it, and the synopsis seems cool.
  • A Stranger asked:
What is the best trade you have every made
    • Shane replied:
Hmm - you've just made me realize that I don't do much trading. So the closest answer I have is the tractor I bought. It's a 1964 Massey Ferguson Super 90 with a loader and snowblower. Someone down the road was selling it for 4k. I thought it was a fair price and was prepared to give him that amount, and then as I was writing the check, he said I could give him 3.5k. It was a pretty neighborly thing for him to do!
  • A Stranger asked:
What was the best compliment you've ever received?
    • Shane replied:
The best compliment I get is when people laugh at my jokes.
  • A Stranger asked:
What was the strategy with becoming a prof
    • Shane replied:
My strategy was non-conventional, normally a university doesn't want to hire their own graduates, for a few reasons. I demonstrated that I was a decent teacher and their were vacancies for the class that I could teach so a natural fit sort of evolved.
  • A Stranger asked:
If there was one food you had to eat for the rest of your life what would it be?
    • Shane replied:
If there were no health ramifications - Pizza. Otherwise potatoes.
  • A Stranger asked:
What's your favorite season of the year?
    • Shane replied:
That's a tough one. I have things to like about every season - but I've gotta go with Summer. No big teaching commitments, lots of time to pursue my side interests.
  • A Stranger asked:
Have you read the Wheel of Time series?
    • Shane replied:
Nope - I have an aversion to series because sometimes my attention span can be too tiny.
  • A Stranger asked:
    Pineapple on pizza?
    • Shane replied:
I thought I had a spam blocker installed on this site.
  • A Stranger asked:
What is the coolest thing/project you have made/worked on?
    • Shane replied:
I think I answered a similar question to this somewheres else in this list - but I really liked the work I did on my site opencircuitinstitute.org and wish that I could make time to continue and improve the project.
  • A Stranger asked:
Without naming the category, what are your top five? (We will try to guess the category!)
    • Shane replied:
      PDIP, 1206, TO-220, Axial, SOP
  • A Stranger asked:
Why do you ask strangers if they think that they would/could beat you at golf? (Assuming that wasn’t just me — and I mean it is a funny/memorable conversation starter, but I was wondering if there was any sort of context behind it)
    • Shane replied:
My wife tells me I can't live in silence which is probably true. So when I'm in an elevator with a stranger, I'd rather talk than not talk. And asking an off the wall question is much more memorable than small talk about the weather. Where did the random question come from? I don't know.
  • A Stranger asked:
Do you have a favorite character?
    • Shane replied:
      Aragorn, son of Arathorn.
  • A Stranger asked:
Who is someone that you look up to?
    • Shane replied:
The best teacher I've had, was my highschool Physics teacher - Rob. In my opinion he's a guy that's got it all figured out, and new how to teach. After highschool my wife and I became good friends with Rob and his wife, and we visit often. Sometimes I snap my fingers during lecture, or when talking to students. I stole that from him.
  • A Stranger asked:
What was you’re biggest “Oh ****” moment when trying to design a circuit?
    • Shane replied:
As an intern I had to design this circuit board that converted one type of aerospace connector to another. It was like 144 pins, very high density. I interpreted the footprint wrong and basically ended up with a scenario where all 144 traces had to overlap. I designed this crazy 12 layer board with this huge via matrix. Wasted like 20 hours until someone pointed out my error.
  • A Stranger asked:
    favorite ryan gosling movie?
    • Shane replied:
Oh. Blade Runner 2049. Hands down one of my top 5 favorite movies. I love me some baby goose.
  • A Stranger asked:
Do you play chess online? If so, what’s ur ELO? If not, that’s okay but if you get bored maybe check out chess.com!
    • Shane replied:
I don't think I'm smart enough to play Chess.
  • A Stranger asked:
    Have you ever played league?
    • Shane replied:
Nope. Once in awhile I play Heroes of the Storm with some friends. And I played DOTA when it was just a Warcraft map. We played it as a LAN party -- good times.
  • A Stranger asked:
What is your all time favorite show or movie.
    • Shane replied:
Show - Breaking Bad. Brian Cranston's acting is just undeniably great. Movie - The Prestige. Excellent story and acting. Plus Magicians.
  • A Stranger asked:
What is your favorite gaming system?
    • Shane replied:
If we're excluding PC, then I'd have to say the GameCube. Purely for nostalgia. Wind Waker, Animal Crossing, Picmin. So many good titles.
  • A Stranger asked:
What is your favorite board game of all time?
    • Shane replied:
I've really been digging Castles of Mad King Ludwig recently. But I suppose my all time favorite would be Lord's of Waterdeep with the expansion.
  • A Stranger asked:
What is one thing you wish you could have in life that you don’t?
    • Shane replied:
Hmm - In terms of physical possessions, a a little off-grid cabin in the middle of the woods on my property. A sort of "disconnect" house.
  • A Stranger asked:
How did you end up teaching at Michigan Tech of all places?
    • Shane replied:
I ended up getting accepted here for grad school doing research in a field that I thought was interesting (Additive Manufacturing), then fell in love with the area and school. So here I stayed.
  • A Stranger asked:
What thing do students do in your class that you most dislike?
    • Shane replied:
It is quite annoying when people talk to each other while I'm trying to lecture. It throws me off and I'd say it's pretty disrespectful.
  • A Stranger asked:

    • Shane replied:
I've never really delved deeply into them, but I'm quite partial to the YM2612 that was used in the Sega Genesis. Beautiful sounds came out of that thing. I also have a Micro Korg which I quite enjoy (If you count that as retro?)
  • A Stranger asked:
    How do you define success?

    • Shane replied:
      All of the above.
  • A Stranger asked:
Would you be able to mentor/assist me with repairing household handheld devices such as hairdryers/straighteners?
    • Shane replied:
I could probably help - there's not too much to those devices electronically speaking. Bring them by my office and I can provide some advice!
  • A Stranger asked:
What is your favorite part of working at MTU?
    • Shane replied:
The Students! You all are curious and nerds in some way shape or form, and I love it.
  • A Stranger asked:
    What games do you play?
    • Shane replied:
The games I'm currently playing are - Dwarf Fortress, Deep Rock Galactic, and Farthest Frontier on PC - and then I've been playing a bunch of Ninja Turtles games on the Switch.
  • A Stranger asked:
What was your favorite Winter Carnival statue you’ve ever seen at your time teaching at Tech?
    • Shane replied:
I really liked the Futurama sculpture at the place in Hancock. Amazing detail. I also liked the Appa from Avatar that was on main street.
  • A Stranger asked:
On a scale of 1-10 (1 being the worst, 10 being the best) how good is peanut butter?
    • Shane replied:
I'm going to go with 8. I use an over-abundance on my toast and it's excellent. But then I get little bumps in the back of my throat. Should I see a doctor?
  • A Stranger asked:
    What's your favorite thing you've programmed/coded?
    • Shane replied:
Probably a software I wrote that uses computational intelligence to help you acquire ideal process parameters experimentally. We were using it to tune difficult 3D Printing processes. https://doi.org/10.1089/3dp.2022.0012
  • A Stranger asked:
Why Did you decide to start teaching/become a professor?
    • Shane replied:
When I was in undergrad, I remember a conversation with a friend. The theme was "Dude, it would be so cool to be a professor." I remember at the time thinking that it was something unobtainable. Especially because my GPA at the time was like 3.5 and I figured I'd never be able to get into graduate school. So I just sort of assumed I'd go into industry, and I was okay with that. Then there was this conversation I had with a faculty member at SVSU that I respected, Brooks Byam, where he had basically explained to me that it wasn't just your GPA that got you into grad school, there were several other factors. After that, my mind was abuzz for like 2 months straight - "What if I did to go grad school and pursue my dream?". Looking back, it felt like the first "real decision" I'd ever made, rather than just going with the flow of things. There's not a day that goes by that I don't wake up excited for my job - so I think I made the right decision.
  • A Stranger asked:
What was the game that made you want to make video games initially?
    • Shane replied:
Hmm - I feel like that's something I never committed to memory. But if I had to say - I'd say RuneScape. I wanted to own a RuneScape like game where people crafted and grinded.
  • A Stranger asked:
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
    • Shane replied:
      Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough!

  • A Stranger asked:
What sorts of things do you like to do in your free time? Any games that you like to play?
    • Shane replied:
I wood work, play guitar, read, raise my daughter, one wheel, cross country ski, D&D, and game. I play Deep Rock Galactic with my cousin quite often. I've been playing Dwarf Fortress a bit recently as well.
  • A Stranger asked:
What's the coolest project you've worked on and where would you recommend someone looking for an independent project start?
    • Shane replied:
The coolest project I've ever worked on. Hmm. It'd probably be the website I started but haven't been able to give attention to for a long time - Opencircuitinstitute.org. The idea was a site where people could make open source circuit designs from a limited parts list, and share and remix them. I was also planning to make and sell circuit mills. I basically was trying to set out to make circuit milling as ubiquitous as 3D Printing. It's a project that I often think of picking back up.
  • A Stranger asked:
    What is your favorite band?
    • Shane replied:
It's gotta be the RHCP (Red Hot Chili Peppers). Solo Artist would be their guitarist - John Frusciante.
  • A Stranger asked:
What's your ideal slice of pizza?
    • Shane replied:
It pains me. I love pizza, but I'm lactose intolerant, so I like it to be a little lighter on the cheese. Approximately 2 - 3 pepperonis that are just a little over cooked sot they're curling up on the sides and have a nice crunch to them. Some fancy spices on the crust. Oh yeah.
  • A Stranger asked:
    Are you a big investor?
    • Shane replied:
I believe investing is a big part about being a responsible adult. I dump like 20% of my paycheck into my retirement account. I do have a smaller "hobby fund" that I use for more risky / fun investments. I managed to ride the GME wave and time it to make a nice little bundle. But I think my days of investing like that are behind me. Slow and steady wins the race. Compound interest is king.
  • A Stranger asked:
What is your favorite song that you think other people DON'T like?
    • Shane replied:
Hmm I like this question. I suppose I have a decent answer. My favorite musical artist is John Frusciante - and he went through a period where he was making albums just for drug money. One of those albums was called "Smile from the Streets you Hold" And he was most definitely under the influence of drugs while writing the album. The song that stands out the most to me from that album is "Height Down" Featuring River Phoenix. River Phoenix (Joaquin Phoenix's brother) was a huge actor in the 80's and 90's that died of an overdose (likely due to the drugs that Frusciante gave him). The song has a very raw yet sincere feeling to it - something that Fruciante has refined much more through out his career. Height Down (feat. River Phoenix)
  • A Stranger asked:
    What is you favorite recipe
    • Shane replied:

  • A Stranger asked:
    What is your favorite animal?
    • Shane replied:

  • A Stranger asked:
What was your favorite subject in school?
    • Shane replied:
In grade school, my favorite was physics. In college, it was Digital Logic. To be teaching that topic now is a dream come true.
  • A Stranger asked:
If I found a 2nd edition of the book would it still be useful? It was published 20 years before the 5th so I was just wondering if it would be worth saving a few bucks.
    • Shane replied:
I'm pro-used book. I don't rely heavily on text books for teaching - it's just another perspective.
